Golden Eagles take on Harvard on Labor Day
MILWAUKEE -Â The Marquette University men's soccer team (2-0-0, 0-0-0 BIG EAST) continue a six-match homestand as they celebrate Hispanic heritage and take on Detroit Mercy (0-2-0, 0-0-0 Horizon) on Friday, September 1 at 7:05 p.m..Â
The Golden Eagles will resume play against the Harvard Crimson (0-0-0, 0-0-0 Ivy) on Monday, September 4 at 2:00 p.m. back at Valley Fields.Â
Merl Earns BIG EASTÂ Opening Week HonorsÂ
Graduate, forward Brooklyn Merl earned BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week following the Golden Eagles' two victories over Drake and Purdue Fort Wayne in opening week action.
Merl played a major role in both of Marquette's opening weekend wins vs Drake and Purdue Fort Wayne, tying league best by recording two goals and two assists to tally six points between the two matches. His performance in the opening week was highlighted by being involved in every goal scored in the Purdue Fort Wayne match to give MU a 3-0 victory.
Golden Eagles Down The Mastodons
A tale of two halves for the Golden Eagles, having a first half where they had multiple quality shots on goal but could not find the net. In the second half, two minutes in, Christian Marquez scores his first goal on the season assisted by Brooklyn Merl.
In the 56th minute Brooklyn Merl finds the back of the net coming from a long pass from goalkeeper Ludvig Målberg. About three minutes later, Brooklyn Merl finds Mitar Mitrovic for his first goal on the season.
Ludvig Målberg finished the afternoon with his first career assist and a clean sheet recording six saves in the match.
Caceres Nets Winner Over Drake
After a three-hour lightening delay, the Golden Eagles and Bulldogs finally hit the pitch at 10 p.m. CT for both squads opening match.
In a physical match from kickoff, senior Edrey Caceres gave MU a 1-0 advantage in the 19th minute with a PK goal, but Caceres' scoring night was not finished.Â
After Drake countered the MU goal with two of their own early in the second half, Mitar Mitrovic found the back of the net to even the score in the 79th. One minute later, Caceres nets the game winner on a beautiful set piece from about 25 yards out to lift the Golden Eagles over the Bulldogs 3-2.Â
Series HistoryÂ
All-time against Detroit, Marquette has controlled the short history of the series, 3-0-0. The first meeting came back in 1989, which resulted in a 2-0 victory for the Golden Eagles. The next matchup would happen within the same season with a 2-1 win over the Titans. The last matchup between the two teams was in 1990, with MU taking a 2-0 win at Detroit.
Monday's match will be the first meeting between Marquette and Harvard in program history.
