MSOC Continues Big 10 Week With Northwestern

MILWAUKEE - Coming off its first defeat of 2026, Marquette University will look to rebound on Saturday as Northwestern comes to Valley Fields. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. CT.

Like the Golden Eagles, the Wildcats are also heading into Saturday's match with their first loss of the season, falling 3-2 earlier in the week to Xavier, 3-2.

Separated by less than two hours, MU and NU share a history that goes back to 1964, but the two have met just three times since the Golden Eagles' string of nine straight wins ended in 2000. The Wildcats are 2-1 since with wins in 2012 (1-0) and 2024 (1-0). MU's last win was a 4-1 route in 2016 in Milwaukee.

Scoring in his first two collegiate games, Marquette's 6-foot-2 freshman forward Tomiwa Adewumi did not let up in his third, registering the first brace of his career in a five-point performance at NIU. The Pittsburgh, Pa., native scored twice in the first six minutes in MU's 4-2 win over the Huskies. Adewumi was tabbed BIG EAST Offensive and Freshman of the Week on Aug. 31 following the performance.

Adewumi is the first Marquette freshman in at least the last two decades to score in his first three collegiate matches.
The freshman is the first MU player in at least the last two decades to score four goals in the first three games of a season.
Adewumi ranks in the Top 15 nationally in total points (12th - 9), points per game (16th - 2.25), total goals (8th - 4) and goals per game (8th - 1.00).
Adewumi was tabbed to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Aug. 24 following two goals in the opening week.

PULLING THE STRINGS
With four assists in 2025, Mateo Stoka has already hit that mark through just four matches in 2026. With three in his last two matches, the midfielder ranks third nationally in total assists and sixth in assists per game.

The two assists at NIU was the second career two-assist performance for the graduate student.

THE ATTACKING TRIO
Twenty-one of Marquette's 28 points have come from the trio of Tomiwa Adewumi (9), Mads Konrad Horgøien (6) and Mateo Stoka (6). All three have recorded points in each of the Golden Eagles' first three matches. Stoka has posted points all four contests.

The trio have attempted 14 of the team's 29 shots. Seven of those shots have been on frame with each finding the back of the net.

TWO IN THE BAG
With two goals in his first season in 2025, Joey Buchanan matched that total in the last two games netting the game-winner at NIU and scoring the MU's lone goal at Wisconsin.

Buchanan is second on the team in total shots (7) and tied for the lead in shots on goal (4).

ROSTER OVERHAUL
During the offseason, Marquette's roster went through a major overhaul following a 7-7-2 record. The coaches casted a wide net, bringing in players from as far as Scandinavia, Switzerland and the Yukon while still sticking to the program's strong recruiting ties to Wisconsin and Illinois.

51.7% of the roster has changed as the program welcomed in 15 new faces.
Of the 15, four are transfers while 11 will enter the year as true freshmen.
Eight of the 15 are from outside of Wisconsin and Illinois with five coming from outside of the United States.

INTERNATIONAL FLAVOR
With the addition of five internationals to this season's roster, Marquette enters 2026 with 11.

Three players hail from Norway with the addition of Viktor Engh. Felix Masson joins Joey Buchanan from western Canada. The third country MU has tapped into for multiple players was Sweden with newcomers Enkido Hackå nd Edvard Liljedahl.
Marquette has four other countries represented on its roster with one player each hailing from Australia, Brazil, England and Switzerland.

STRONG IN THE NONCONFERENCE
Now in its third season under Head Coach David Korn, Marquette is a combined 12-3-5 in the nonconference which includes a 6-0-2 mark in 2025.

The Golden Eagles have not lost a nonconference match in its last 11 (8-0-3).
MU's last nonconference defeat came on Sept. 15, 2024, a 2-0 loss to UIC.
Two of MU's three nonconference losses under Korn came in 2024 against ranked opponents Wisconsin and Northwestern. The Golden Eagles will travel to Madison to face the Badgers and host Northwestern this season.
