Golden Eagles suffer second defeat at home this season
MILWAUKEE – Despite holding a 13-10 advantage in shots and generating several late opportunities, Marquette was unable to find the equalizer in a 1-0 loss to UConn on Friday evening at Valley Fields. The Golden Eagles dropped to 8-5-1 overall and 1-4-0 in BIG EAST play.
Marquette controlled much of the attacking play early, earning a pair of corner kicks in the opening three minutes and forcing UConn goalkeeper Kyle Durham into an early save on a shot from Mateo Stoka. Joey Buchanan also hammered a shot from 12 yards out just wide of right post.
The match's lone goal came in the 23rd minute when the Huskies capitalized on quick strike down the left flank. Sending a dangerous ball into the six-yard box with Golden Eagle defenders tracking back, one got a foot on it but redirected the cross into the back of the net for an own goal to give the visitors a 1-0 lead. The score stood as the only breakthrough of the evening despite a combined 23 shots between the two sides.
Trailing at halftime, the Golden Eagles pushed forward after the break and outshot UConn 9-3 over the final 45 minutes. Marquette put four shots on target in the second half, three in the final 20 minutes.
The Golden Eagles continued to press late, earning a corner kick in the 83rd minute and creating a final opportunity in the closing seconds, but were unable to break through before time expired.
Defensively, Marquette limited UConn to just three shots on goal. Goalkeeper Cameron Simpson made three saves, including two in the first half.
