Simpson produces career-high seven saves.
MADISON, Wis. – A season-high seven saves for Cameron Simpson was not enough for the Marquette University men's soccer on Monday night as the team fell 3-1 to No. 23 Wisconsin at McClimon Soccer Complex. The Golden Eagles were outshot 21-4.
Wisconsin struck first in the 14th minute. Emile Kisse slipped through the defense and looked to go opposite post but his ball was deflected into the back of the net by Tristan Ronnestad-Stevens who was tracking back in defense.
Seeing consistent pressure, MU surrendered a second off a corner that dropped into the box for a free look that found a second Badger who knocked it in in the 27th minute.
The tide began to turn from that point as Marquette tried to force their way back. It came in the 31st minute. Mateo Stoka lofted in a corner that Joey Buchanan rose above his marker and headed into the opposite post.
With the Golden Eagles heading into the half with momentum, it was quickly dashed a minute into the second half. Following a review of a handball by MU in its box, Wisconsin was awarded a penalty kick. Marquette challenged a potential foul prior to handball but it was not given. Cristobal Porter converted from the spot and gave the Badgers a 3-1 advantage.
UW was awarded a second penalty in the 63rd minute on handball following a review. This time, Simpson pushed the attempt away to keep the deficit at two.
