Bonnie Lacey On MARDI GRAS Service Trip:Â
During winter break in January 2022, Bonnie Lacey (Wsoc) participated in MARDI GRAS, a student-lead service trip to New Orleans, where they served the Lower 9th neighborhood. The area is still recovering from hurricane disasters, and the group did home repair, provided food and fellowship, and immersed in the long-held New Orleans culture in this historic neighborhood.Jamie Kutey Leads Marquette Campus Clean-Up:Â
Walking to work across Marquette's quiet campus over spring break, senior Jamie Kutey on the Marquette's women's soccer team, noticed the bright sunshine and the warm breeze.
She also noticed the trash. Everywhere. Cans, bottles, wrappers, packaging, garbage everywhere. It was in the street, clogging sewer grates, lining the edges of dirty snow mounds, on the sidewalks and grass, tangled in bike racks and heaped against foundations of campus buildings.

What she didn't see was trash cans readily available and wondered where she would toss the trash even if she picked it up herself.

As some of you may know, we recently got back from a week-long service trip to Costa Rica. Marquette Athletics partnered with an organization called 'Courts for Kids' to help send about 16 Marquette student-athletes down to Juanilama, Costa Rica and build a sports court for the community. Working alongside the Peace Corps representative down there, the community decided that their biggest need they wanted to fulfill was building a sports court. Our specific goal was to work with the community to build this court, but it quickly became much more than simply building a concrete basketball court.
