MILWAUKEE -- The Marquette University men's soccer team went 1-1-0 last week, including a 2-0 non-conference win at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and a 2-0 loss to Providence College in the last regular season match of 2008 at Valley Fields.
Junior defender Billy Von Rueden assisted on both of Marquette's goals versus the UWM Panthers, while freshman midfielder Calum Mallace and junior midfielder Tom Lynn picked up their first collegiate goals. Junior goalkeeper Matt Pyzdrowski earned his collegiate-high fourth shutout of the season, recording five saves in the match.
"It was a good victory," head coach Louis Bennett said of the game against UWM. "Ironically, we didn't necessarily play our best soccer, but we played our most effective soccer. Obviously, bringing that [Milwaukee] Cup back to this side of town puts a smile on all of our faces."
On Oct. 25, Providence scored twice in the first half, including an own goal.
"We threatened, but we couldn't deliver," said Bennett. "I think [Providence] definitely tied us up, stopped us from doing what we needed to do."
