DES MOINES, Iowa - Marshall Morehead and the Marquette men?s soccer teams kept their streaks alive this evening, as the junior striker led the Golden Eagles to a 2-0 road win at Drake. In scoring his sixth and seventh goals of the season this afternoon, Morehead has now scored in five straight games, helping Marquette win its fourth straight game to even its season record at 4-4-0.
As he has during his recent goal-scoring streak, Morehead got in the books early, netting the eventual game winner at the 14:16 mark on a header off assists from Sean Reti and Jeremiah Bass. Bass and Morehead hooked up again in the 39th minute, with Morehead netting the insurance goal to close out the game?s scoring. The junior from Stillwater, Minn., leads the team, and is among the Conference USA leaders, with seven goals and 15 points.
?Once again, Morehead helped take the pressure off by getting us that early goal,? Marquette head coach Steve Adlard said. ?That let us play our game. It was a gutsy performance by Drake - they had several good chances. But we got lucky some of the time and played well some of the time and came away with the victory.
It?s a win on the road against a focused team that had won two in a row. So you can?t complain about that.?
Junior keeper Greg Guglielmino went the distance for the Golden Eagles, making two saves for his second shutout of the season. He was aided by strong play from Bass, who played the full 90 minutes.
Marquette is now 4-4-0 and 1-1-0 in C-USA. Drake falls to 2-4-0.
Marquette stays on the road but gets back in C-USA action on Sun., Sept. 26, when the Golden Eagles play at Louisville at Noon (CT).
