MILWAUKEE - The Marquette men?s soccer team lost its final regular-season game this evening, falling to UMKC 1-0 on a blustery night at Valley Fields. The Kangaroos? Eric Parrish headed in a direct kick by Eric Kuster in the game?s 21st minute for the lone goal of the contest. Marquette loses its second straight game and concludes its regular-season slate with a 10-8-0 mark. UMKC improved to 12-5-0.
?We played below par this evening,? Marquette head coach Steve Adlard said. ?Every loose ball fell to (UMKC) and when they did, we had to chase and we were way too late on the ball. We were always playing catch-up, and that?s tough to do against a quick team. They were very quick.?
UMKC used a strong easterly wind in the opening frame, peppering Marquette keeper Greg Guglielmino with nine shots and applying pressure in the Golden Eagles? defensive zone for a majority of the first half. Despite the Kangaroo onslaught and the fact that they lost co-captain and left outside back Chad Garofola for the game with a facial injury, the Golden Eagles allowed only the Parrish goal at the 20:34 mark.
Marquette opened strong in the second half, but could get no decent scoring chances, even with the wind. ?Roos? keeper Clint McDuffie came on to start the latter 45 minutes and made five saves and directed a consistent defensive effort by UMKC. The Golden Eagles had a flurry of corners in the last three minutes, but could not convert.
?We played passively in the back, instead of applying pressure,? Adlard said. ?That was our undoing tonight. But, UMKC showed that they are a good team. They have a good team awareness, fought for every loose ball - and did so relentlessly and with success.?
Guglielmino made a Marquette career-high 11 saves in going the distance for the Golden Eagles.
Marquette next plays on Thu., Nov. 11, when it opens play at the Conference USA Championship in Birmingham, Ala. The third-seeded Golden Eagles will play the #6 seed, which, with several regular-season games yet to be played this week, could be any one of five teams vying for the #4-6 seeds in the tournament.
