Updated plan identifies department's mission statement, vision statement and core values
The Marquette University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics has announced its updated strategic plan (2026-31), which identifies its mission statement, vision statement and core values.
"This strategic plan reflects who we are as a department, who we aspire to become, and how we will continue advancing the mission of Marquette University through athletics," Vice President and Director of Athletics Mike Broeker said. "At its core is a commitment to developing the whole person and preparing student-athletes to lead, serve, and make a positive impact in the world.
"As college athletics continues to evolve, there has never been a more critical time to be strategically focused and aligned in our efforts," Broeker added. "Built through the collaborative work of our athletics team, this plan provides a clear roadmap for sustained success and responsible stewardship of our resources."
MISSION STATEMENT
We develop our students through athletics to positively impact the world.
VISION STATEMENT
We will foster a culture of excellence where student-athletes thrive academically, athletically, and personally. We will compete at the highest levels of collegiate athletics while upholding integrity and the Jesuit tradition of service and leadership.
COMPETITIVE ASPIRATIONS
We aspire to achieve sustained national prominence by investing in programs that elevate the University, inspire our community, and reflect our values. We will support a men's basketball program that is a nationally prominent brand and recognized leader in college basketball, advancing the visibility, reputation, and mission of Marquette University; capitalize on the growing interest and financial viability of women's basketball and volleyball to expand Marquette's national profile and competitive impact; and position our Olympic sports to consistently compete among their BIG EAST peers, strengthening our standing as one of the conference's most respected athletics programs.
CORE VALUES
Our culture is defined not only by what we achieve, but by how we achieve it. Our values guide our decisions, shape our relationships, and establish the expectations we hold for ourselves and one another. As teammates united by a common purpose, we commit to demonstrating these values every day in service to our student-athletes, our colleagues, and the University.
ACCOUNTABLE
Accountability means owning your role and responsibilities with clarity and integrity. Being accountable also means holding ourselves and each other to the standard of 'Be The Difference'—bringing positive attitude, energy, effort, and follow-through in academics, athletics, and personal conduct.
RESPECTFUL
Respect is the foundation of trust and collaboration. We foster personal and professional growth by openly accepting feedback and providing it constructively. We leverage tools and resources to maximize efficiency and reduce strain on teammates. Respect means listening actively, communicating with professionalism, and valuing diverse perspectives that strengthen our teams and community.
RELIABLE
Reliability is about being someone others can count on—every time. We commit to showing up prepared, following through on responsibilities, and staying consistent in effort, words, and actions. Reliability means earning trust through integrity, taking ownership of our work, and doing the little things right. When everyone is reliable, we can appropriately support one another and rise together.
COLLABORATIVE
Collaboration means working together toward common goals under a shared vision. We communicate openly, listen actively, and include others impacted by the decisions in our decision making. Collaboration builds trust through unity, respect, and thoughtful engagement, supporting and challenging one another, and embracing change as an opportunity for growth. True collaboration means showing up for each other, trusting, and uniting for the good of the team—never operating alone.
COMMUNICATIVE
Communication is the foundation of trust and collaboration. We commit to clarity and transparency, sharing information openly and promptly, so teammates have what they need to succeed. We explain expectations, goals, and decisions clearly, ensuring understanding across all involved. We listen actively before responding, seek to understand before being understood, and ask clarifying questions rather than making assumptions. We welcome diverse perspectives and communicate without judgment, fostering respect and trust.
SELFLESS
Selflessness means that we act in service to others and the greater good. We sacrifice personal convenience and place team success above individual recognition. We step in to support teammates and seek opportunities to serve others in ways that create meaningful impact for our student-athletes and our community. We celebrate the successes of others openly, share credit generously, and offer help without expecting recognition or reward.
