Burns ties a career-high with four goals, Serrano posts six points in defeat.
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Marquette University women's lacrosse team (3-3) fell to Jacksonville (4-0), 15-13, Sunday afternoon in the Sunshine State.Â
The Golden Eagles were led by Sarah Beth Burns, who tied a career-high with four goals, including two from the free-position. Dani Serrano led with six points (two goals, career-high four assists), while Hanna Bodner, Tess Osburn, and Ella Mautz each added a pair of scores. Burns and Riley Jenkins each tallied four draw controls, while the goalkeeping duo of Mikayla Yang and Jillian Howell combined for nine saves. Â
After the hosts scored the opening goal, Bodner found the back of the net on the ensuing possession to knot the game at one. A string of three-straight goals pulled the score to 4-1 for the Dolphins, the Golden Eagles answered with a six-goal stretch of their own, including two each from Serrano and Burns, to take a three-goal lead early in the second period.Â
The Dolphins stopped the Golden Eagle rally with a pair of scores, but a huge save from Howell and a behind-the-net feed from Serrano to Osburn brought the lead back to two for Marquette. JU would score the next four-straight to retake the lead, 10-8, heading into halftime.Â
A defensive battle broke out to open the third period, as it took nearly eight minutes for a team to score, but Osburn found the back of the net off an assist from Adrianna Commodari to break the scoring drought and bring MU within one. Marquette found the equalizer from Jenkins, knotting the game at 10, but the Dolphins would score the two-straight to regain the lead. Burns tallied her third of the day off an eight-meter attempt to cut the deficit, but JU would tally a late score to lead, 13-11, heading into the final quarter.Â
JU would add another two to open the fourth, extending the lead to four, 15-11, but Mautz would find her second goal of the game to end the scoring run and bring the Golden Eagles within three. Burns added her fourth with under two to go to cut the deficit to two, but timely saves led to the hosts taking the game, 15-13.Â
