Golden Eagle men finished third, women 20th in third race of season.
SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The Marquette University cross country team completed their third race of the season on Friday at the Joe Piane Invitational, with the men finishing third and the women finishing 20th.
"Overall, it was a fantastic day! The whole team has come such a long way and I am so proud. The team's depth is impressive compared to where we were last year" Associate Head Cross Country Coach Jack Hackett said of the team's performance.
MU competed in both the open and gold races, with the women kicking the day off in the open 5k. In the women's open race, Marquette finished ninth with 228 points. Senior Mia Nutile led the Golden Eagles with a 51st-place finish in 19:13.8.
Sophomore Brynn Miller followed in 72nd at 19:44.6, while junior Maggie Jortberg placed 75th in 19:48.8. Sophomore Allie Opalka finished 94th in 20:23.1, and sophomore Parker Allen completed Marquette's scoring five in 97th at 20:38.0. Junior Vanessa Henderson rounded out the Marquette contingent, placing 98th with a time of 20:56.6.
The women also raced in the Gold 5k, finishing 20th with 467 points. Freshman Isabelle Wiebe led the Golden Eagles with a 76th-place finish in 18:34.8, while junior Sadie Kibelstis followed closely behind in 81st at 18:37.0. Sophomore Taya Gummerson was Marquette's third finisher, placing 111th in 18:51.0, while sophomore Elise Fischer crossed the line 114th in 18:53.6. Sophomore Kaylie Earl rounded out the scoring five in 124th with a time of 19:00.5. Senior Alexa Overstreet finished 125th in 19:01.4, and sophomore Paige Haglund completed Marquette's top seven in 154th at 19:22.6.
"The women's race we got out very conservatively, we were in 23rd place and our number one was in 120th, and when they finished Isabelle Wiebe was 72nd overall. Sadie Kibelstis passed almost 70 people as well. Overall the team moved up really well, we just gave ourselves a little too much work to do, but happy with the progress. The team's depth is impressive compared to where we were last year, last year we had two women under 19:01 and this year we had six" Hackett said of the women's race.
Marquette's men started the day in the open 8k race, where sophomore Max Borgmeier led Marquette with a 62nd-place finish in 26:05.4. Freshman Brode Engelien followed in 101st with a time of 27:03.9. Freshman Teddy Fritz finished 113th in 27:45.3, while sophomore Sam Chandler and junior Owen Wise did not finish.
In the strongest showing of the day, the MU men finished third in the Gold 8K with 164 points, trailing only Tiffin (120) and Western Ontario (152). The Golden Eagles placed three runners among the top 26 overall. Sophomore Dylan Riniker led Marquette for the third consecutive meet, placing fourth overall with a time of 24:03.0. This was the fastest recorded time for a Marquette cross country athlete since 2019, and Riniker has not finished below the top-five individually in a race all season. Senior Logan Goodman followed in 19th at 24:32.2, while senior Nick Parrell crossed the line 26th in 24:39.7. Junior Edgar Valles finished 53rd in 25:04.4, while graduate student Will Allen rounded out MU's scoring five in 62nd at 25:07.9. Freshman Nick Ahlheim placed 74th in 25:18.3, and sophomore Patrick Clune completed the Golden Eagles' top seven in 81st at 25:22.6.
"The men's race was probably the best team race we have had in a long time. Our top five averaged 24:40, and we haven't had anyone run that fast since 2019. We have to start with Dylan though, as the gameplan was to go out and race at the front, and he attacked it so well, believed in himself and kept with it as the group started to fade away. To be at this level as a sophomore is a testament to the work he has put in. This was a loaded field and to finish 3rd here was a big confidence booster."
