Riniker finishes fifth, Wiebe 17th to lead Golden Eagles in season-opening race.
GREEN BAY, Wis. – The Marquette University cross country teams opened the 2026 season with a pair of strong performances at the Phoenix Open on Saturday, with the men's team finishing second and the women placing third at the Phoenix Alumni Cross Country Course.
"This was our best start to a season by far in my time here," associate head cross country coach Jack Hackett said. "It was a sneaky hot and humid day, and I was really proud of how the team competed and moved up as the races went on. We had the plan to go out patient and together through the first two miles before trying to hunt down some other teams. I felt like we ran really well for the first meet of the season. The times were a little slow across the board, but that was due to the harder course, heat and humidity."
The Marquette men totaled 49 points in the 8,000-meter race to finish second behind Wisconsin-Stevens Point, which claimed the team title with 32 points. Sophomore Dylan Riniker led the Golden Eagles with a fifth-place finish in 25:22.4, while senior Nick Parrell crossed the line seventh in 25:36.2. Senior Logan Goodman gave MU three finishers inside the top nine, placing ninth in 25:49.7.
"For the men we were able to place second and beat a few really good teams," Hackett said. "Dylan Riniker and Nick Parrell worked together off the top group and maintained their place throughout the race. They were in a great spot and raced well."
Junior Edgar Valles finished 15th in 26:13.0, and graduate student Will Allen rounded out Marquette's scoring five in 17th at 26:16.4. Freshman Nick Ahlheim placed 30th in his first collegiate 8K with a time of 26:44.8, while sophomore Max Borgmeier rounded out MU's top seven in 45th at 27:18.8.
On the women's side, Marquette totaled 121 points to finish third in the 6,000-meter race. St. Thomas won the team title with 28 points, followed by Northern Michigan with 50 points. The Golden Eagles finished tied with Wisconsin-Stevens Point at 121 points and were third in the official team standings.
Freshman Isabelle Wiebe paced the Golden Eagles in her collegiate debut, finishing 17th in 23:30.1. Sophomore Taya Gummerson followed in 22nd at 23:42.1, while junior Sadie Kibelstis placed 25th in 23:51.6.
"On the women's side I was really pleasantly surprised by Isabelle Wiebe leading the team," Hackett said. "She was obviously a talent from high school, but she's brought that right into the team and we are happy to have her. Taya and Sadie have done a great job training really hard this summer and you can see the work they have put in."
Senior Alexa Overstreet placed 38th in 24:14.2, while sophomore Kaylie Earl rounded out Marquette's scoring five in 44th at 24:21.3. Sophomore Elise Fischer finished 51st in 24:33.2, and senior Mia Nutile completed MU's top seven in 64th at 24:56.2.
