
Marquette Earns 3-0 Victory Over Providence

The Golden Eagles record their first BIG EAST win on Friday night

The Marquette women's volleyball team swept Providence in the first BIG EAST match of the season. MU was led by Natalie Ring with 11 kills and Isabela Haggard with 28 assists. Defensively, Keira Schmidt led all players with six blocks and Ring added 10 digs to secure the win.
MU left no room for doubt as they quickly got out to a 10-2 lead. With Mari King serving, the Golden Eagles went on a 6-0 run to extend the lead to 18-4. Providence responded, adding six points to the board but Marquette proved to be too much as the Blue and Gold closed the set 25-10. Emma Parks, Ring, Elena Radeff, and Hattie Bray combined for 8 kills,each earning two a piece. King, Haggard, and Schmidt chipped in with one kill respectively.Â
The second started off with both teams exchanging points with Providence trailing by as much as nine at 16-7. Down the stretch, Marquette capitalized off Friar errors to stretch the lead to 21-15 forcing a Providence timeout. The Golden Eagles kept their momentum as Julia Stanev secured her first kill of the season to bring MU within one point. Marquette sealed the set win 25-16 after an attack error from Macy Taylor. Ring led with six kills followed by Elena Radeff with four.
The final set was a battle between the two teams as Providence began to show signs of a comeback. The Friars found themselves with a 7-6 lead over MU early in the third. Ring put the Golden Eagles ahead 10-9 and the Blue and Gold never looked back. Marquette led the rest of the way, but the Friars would not be put away easily. Providence cut into the Golden Eagles lead 22-21 after a kill from Kaia Easterbrook. The final three points were secured by MU defense and Providence errors. Marquette took the final set 25-21 and completed the 3-0 sweep in its first conference match of the season.
