The Marquette women's tennis team secured 20 wins throughout the weekend
The Marquette women's tennis team opened its tournament season at the Gopher Invite last weekend in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Throughout the weekend the Blue and Gold recorded 10 singles wins and 10 doubles wins.
MU coach Brett Barnett on the past weekend:
"I'm really proud of the team for how they competed, fought for each other and represented Marquette this weekend. Â They've been working so hard in practice, and it was great to see everyone play well and have success early in our year. I think our doubles were good the whole weekend. Â Joey and Aiyana played great, going 3-0 and I thought Maria and Elena did a nice job complementing each other on court as well. Â
Elena had a great tournament in singles, going 3-0 and winning her flight. Â She stayed true to herself and played her style of tennis all weekend. Lu played great and was confident on court in all her matches. Â Our line senior Emma is such a great competitor, always fights, and is someone I know I can count on in dual matches. Aiyana played extremely well on Friday, and her best tennis is ahead of her. Joey played well and showed me she is very adaptable, and her variety can make her successful in each match.
Our freshmen did an incredible job this weekend. Â Maria improves each day, played so well, had nice wins in singles and doubles and is going to be a tough matchup for a lot of players. Â Elise did so great all weekend. Â We have some things to work on for sure. Â I learned a lot all weekend on how we respond in different situations, but this is a team that cares about each other and showed me they will compete hard and fight for each other on court. Â This was a great start for a young team, and we will be very dangerous all year if we keep improving each day."
