Prior to Marquette: Russell was a three-time letter winner in volleyball at Osseo Senior High where she also earned three letters in softball. Earned All-Conference recognition in 2006 and 2007. Recorded 77 blocks in 2006 and 87 as a senior.

Personal: Russell was born in Brainerd, Minn., to Sherrod and DeAnna Russell. She has two younger brothers, Sherrod Jr. and Joseph. Her father played basketball at North Dakota. Her uncle, Cazzie Russell was an All-American basketball player at the University of Michigan before being selected No. 1 overall in the 1966 NBA Draft.
