Duva clinches team win with victory at No. 6 singles
The Marquette University women's tennis team (5-8) continued the dual campaign on Friday with a 4-3 victory over Bradley at the Sprovieri Tennis Complex.
The victory was the team's fifth of the season (three all of 2024-25) and the squad will head to Florida next week for a trio of matches on its annual Spring trip.
"What a match and performance by the team today," head coach Brett Barnett said. "We came out on fire in doubles and played maybe our best of the year. Bradley battled to the end and had us in a tough spot.
"Great match by Elise beating a strong player and Aiyana came up huge, coming back from way down to keep us in this," Barnett added. "Everyone fought so hard and I know when it comes down to Elena she will close and get the clinch! So proud of how we are playing and competing as a group! We Are Marquette!"
Marquette needed just over 20 minutes to claim the doubles point, earning quick 6-0 and 6-1 wins at No. 2 and No. 1, respectively. The MU duo of Maria Poon and Elena Duva secured the point at No. 1.
The transition to singles would prove to be not as easy for the Golden Eagles as the Braves quickly evened the score at 1-1 with a straight-set win at No. 3. Elise Barnstedt pushed Marquette ahead 2-1 with a 7-5, 6-2 decision at No. 1, only to see BU answer back at No. 2.
The Golden Eagles moved ahead 3-2 after an impressive rally by sophomore Aiyana Abbott, who trailed 5-2 in the second set at No. 4 before turning the match in the opposite direction eventual claiming a 3-6, 7-5, 6-2 win.
With two contests left in play and needing just one point for the clinching team victory, the match came down to the No. 6 position and sophomore Elena Duva was able to rally for a 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 win.
