T&F Kicks Off Outdoor Season at WashU, Illinois State

Golden Eagles set 15 new PR's, multiple all-time marks in opening weekend of outdoor season.
The Marquette University track and field team split competition over the weekend, sending distance athletes to the WashU Distance Carnival in St. Louis, while the rest of the squad competed at the Joyce Morton-Kief Invitational at Illinois State in Normal, Ill.. The Golden Eagles totaled 15 personal records and multiple strong performances as the team kicked off the outdoor season.
"It was an excellent opening weekend to our outdoor season. We had several very solid performances at WashU Thursday and Friday and followed that up with several big marks at Illinois State. Im proud of how we came to compete" director of track and field & cross country Bert Rogers said of the opening weekend.
At the distance carnival, the Marquette women opened the weekend with strong performances in the 5,000 meters on Friday. Freshman Elise Fischer led the way, finishing in 18:47.99 to record a personal best. Fellow classmate Taya Gummerson also turned in a PR, crossing the line in 19:09.23, while freshman Kaylie Earl added another personal best with a time of 19:46.86.
On the men's side, the Golden Eagles then produced a string of personal records in the 5,000 meters Friday. Junior Nicholas Parrell led Marquette with a PR time of 14:44.69, followed closely by freshman Patrick Clune, who ran 14:55.38 for a personal best. Freshman Dylan Riniker added a PR of his own in 14:58.74, while junior Logan Goodman clocked a season-best 15:12.41 that marked a personal record. Senior Will Allen and freshman Sam Chandler rounded out the effort with PRs of 15:24.49 and 15:38.64, respectively. Sophomore Edgar Valles closed out the meet for Marquette with a personal-record performance in the 10,000 meters, running 29:40.23 on Thursday night.
Meanwhile, the Golden Eagles produced multiple top-five finishes and PRs at the Joyce Morton-Kief Invitational. In the women's sprints, sophomore Sanai Baker placed sixth in the 100 meters with a personal-record time of 12.40, while sophomore Natalie Lupa added a PR in the event with a time of 13.17. Freshman Nonic Oelling led Marquette in the 200 meters, finishing 10th in 25.82, while junior Sylvia Fochesato and sophomore Libby McCarthy each recorded personal bests in 26.46 and 26.75, respectively.
Freshman Marley Stoller and freshman Kieran Petrie both earned podium finishes in the 400 meters, placing second and third with times of 57.87 and 59.17. In the 800 meters, graduate student Daylee Braden finished third overall in 2:14.63. Olivia Verden added a third-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles, clocking 1:06.70, while the women's 4x100-meter relay of Sophia Abraham, Nonic Oelling, Norah Peiffle and Sanai Baker placed third in 48.63.
In the field, sophomore Libby McCarthy cleared 1.57 meters to place third in the high jump, while junior Alexis Boyer recorded a personal best in the pole vault by clearing 3.28 meters. In the throws, sophomore Ally Broaddus placed fifth in the discus with a PR of 41.05 meters and added another PR in the hammer throw at 46.75 meters. Junior Megan White placed fifth in the hammer with a personal-best mark of 47.68 meters. Junior Riley Ward highlighted the meet for Marquette with a first-place finish in the javelin, throwing a personal-record 42.68 meters that also marked a new Marquette school record.
On the men's side, senior Justin Juniel placed fifth in the 100 meters with a time of 10.99, while sophomore Frankie McGee followed closely behind in sixth with a personal-record 11.00. Freshman Blake Frea delivered one of the top performances of the weekend, winning the 200 meters in a personal-best time of 21.64 that ranks 10th all-time in Marquette program history. Sophomore Thomas Zambianchi added a PR of 22.39 in the same event.
In middle-distance action, freshman Jack Chadwick ran a personal-record 4:02.56 in the 1,500 meters. Freshman Charlie Dutmer tallied a fifth-place finish in the 110-meter hurdles with a PR of 15.58 before also setting a personal record in the 400-meter hurdles. The men's 4x400-meter relay of Charlie Dutmer, Andrew Klopcic, Alika Lugo and Blake Frea captured a first-place finish in 3:22.05, while the 4x100-meter relay placed fourth.
In the field, sophomore Russell Czerwinski finished fourth in the high jump after clearing 1.90 meters. Sophomore Mason Cornwell placed fifth in the pole vault by clearing 4.38 meters, while Louis Hebson recorded a PR in the long jump. Senior John Pitta finished fourth in the triple jump with a mark of 13.13 meters.
The throws group capped the weekend with strong performances, led by senior Cole Donahe, who won the javelin with a throw of 57.40 meters. Freshman Tommy Majchrowicz followed with a second-place finish and a personal-record throw of 56.50 meters that ranks eighth all-time at Marquette. Junior Henrik Rosario added a PR in the event with a mark of 48.97 meters. Freshman Alex Matzke recorded personal bests in both the shot put and discus, while senior Josh Pirogovsky set a PR in the shot put at 14.36 meters.
