Jocelyn Leigh nets first goal with the Golden Eagles
The Marquette University women's soccer team (3-1-0, 0-0-0 BIG EAST) dropped a tough 2-1 decision against No. 21 Wisconsin (4-0-0, 0-0-0 Big Ten) on Sunday evening in non-conference action at Valley Fields.
Â
The Badgers opened the scoring less than two minutes into the match, heading home a rebound for the first goal scored against Hailey Wade and Marquette this season.
Â
The Golden Eagles were able to even the score at 1-1 at the 24:55 mark, after video review confirmed the forward Jocelyn Leigh had been tripped in the box and she converted on the resulting penalty kick for her first score of the season. Forward Josie Bieda also had a breakaway opportunity late in the first half, but it was saved by UW netminder Drew Stover from 15 yards out.
Â
Marquette's best scoring chance after intermission came early in the half, but Megan Murray's header from six years out went just wide of the post after a quick transition attack by the Golden Eagles.
Â
The Badgers netted what proved to be the game winner at the 62:57 mark, heading home a corner kick from 12 yards out.
Â
"I am really, really proud of our team and the resiliency it showed," head coach Chris Allen said. "That obviously wasn't the start we wanted, but for our kids to fight back like they did really showed the grit that the group has developed as a team."
Â
UP NEXT: The Golden Eagles open a two-match road swing at Minnesota on Thursday, Aug. 28 at 12 p.m. CT before traveling to St. Thomas on Sunday, Aug. 31
