Cervantes was medalist at the Irish Creek Collegiate
BIG EAST Release
NEW YORK – Marquette University freshman men's golfer Vincent Cervantes was named the BIG EAST Conference Male Golfer of the Week for the first time in his career, the league announced on Thursday.
Â
Cervantes fired a 6-under 64 in Tuesday's final round of the Irish Creek Collegiate to earn the first medalist honor of his college career. Alongside a 4-under 66 from junior Johan Widal and a 2-under 68 from senior Max Lyons, Cervantes helped the Golden Eagles secure their third event win (-5, 284-271—655) of the year as they outpaced the tournament field by 13 strokes. The event was play at The Club at Irish Creek in Kannapolis, North Carolina.
Â
With a clean, six-birdie card on Tuesday, Cervantes outlasted Charleston Southern's Layne Lambert on two playoff holes (Nos. 18 and 1) and broke a tie to earn the individual title (-4, 72-64—136). Cervantes is the first MU freshman to win an individual crown since former Marquette All-American Hunter Eichhhorn claimed the 2018 BIG EAST Individual Championship at Callawassie Island.
Â
Cervantes's 64 on Tuesday marks a new collegiate best and seven of the 10 rounds he has carded this spring have been par-or-better.
Â
The Golden Eagles return to action on Easter weekend in the Boilermaker Invitational on April 19-20 at Ackerman-Allen Course in West Lafayette, Indiana at the Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex.
