MU Head Cross Country Coach Sean Birren Steps Down

Birren directed men’s and women’s programs for five seasons
Marquette University head cross country coach Sean Birren has stepped down, effective immediately, Vice President and Director of Athletics Bill Scholl announced Friday afternoon.

Birren has been with the men's and women's programs as head coach for each of the past five seasons, serving as the interim head coach in 2019-20 before being named the permanent head coach in January of 2020. His role at Marquette also included a role as assistant coach on the track & field team, with a focus on the distance events.

"We want to thank Sean for his contributions to not only our department, but university as a whole," Scholl said. "We wish he and his family the best of luck in the future."

A national search for a new coach will begin immediately and in the interim, Director of Track & Field/Cross Country Bert Rogers will oversee the cross country programs.
