Golden Eagles host Xavier on Sunday at 1 p.m. CT on Senior Day
The Marquette University women's soccer team (5-10-3, 2-5-1 BIG EAST) opened up a two-match homestand Thursday night with a 2-1 win against Providence (6-9-1, 3-5-0 BIG EAST) at Valley Fields.
Â
Marquette led 1-0 at the intermission after Josie Bieda netted her third goal of the season at the 32:50 mark. Senior Tess O'Connell's free kick from outside the top of the box rocketed off the crossbar and Bieda was there to tap it home from eight yards out. The goal was originally called offsides, but ruled good after review.
Â
After the Friars tied the score at 1-1 in the 63rd minute on a penalty kick, O'Connell gave Marquette the lead for good with her team-leading sixth score of the season. Classmates Alexa Maletis and Maggie Starker played a short corner kick quickly and Starker's perfectly-placed service found the head of O'Connell at the pack post.
Â
"We talked about execution heading into the game and how we have been games previously, but the opponents were winning the big moments," head coach Chris Allen said. "I thought tonight we won the big moments and attacked the ball in the air on set pieces like we haven't recently."
Â
Redshirt freshman Charlotte Huggard finished with six saves and picked up her first-career victory.
