No. 23 Volleyball downs LSU in four sets

MILWAUKEE – The No. 23 Marquette University women's volleyball team picked up its second win over a Southeastern Conference opponent this season with a 25-19, 25-16, 20-25, 25-14 win over LSU on Saturday afternoon at the Al McGuire Center.

Junior Aubrey Hamilton led the Golden Eagles (5-1) with 15 kills on .314 hitting, while Ella Foti (11) and Jenna Reitsma (10) each reached double figures. Libero Carly Skrabak posted 18 digs and a career-best four service aces for MU, which connected on eight aces this afternoon. Marquette hit .289 as a team, including .375 in the second frame.

Middle blocker Carsen Murray notched seven kills and six blocks for MU, and keyed a 5-0 run in the deciding set with a kill and a pair of solo blocks.

LSU (4-4) was held to .230 hitting despite a .515 (18-1-33) mark in a third-set win. Hannah Jacobs led the Tigers with 11 kills, while Sanaa Dotson had 10.

Saturday's contest on World Suicide Prevention Day was MU's Mental Health Awareness Match. The Golden Eagles teamed with alumna Jenny Fischer (Comm '19) and her Keep Showing Up campaign in support of suicide prevention awareness and mental health as a whole. National Suicide Prevention Week is Sunday, Sept. 4, to Saturday, Sept. 10. World Suicide Prevention Day is observed on Sept. 10 each year.
Marquette holds a 2-1 record all-time against the Tigers, with the most recent matchup coming in 2018 in Waco, Texas. The Golden Eagles swept LSU in three sets in that matchup.
The win was MU's second this season over a SEC school. MU opened the season with a 3-2 win at then-No. 11 Kentucky.
MU setter Yadhira Anchante had a career-high 44 assists and added 13 digs for her fourth double-double this year.
MU used an 8-0 run midway through the first set to pull ahead, 20-14. Foti led MU with five kills on .571 hitting in the first frame.
The Golden Eagles jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the fourth frame and led 17-9 after a 5-0 run. MU scored six of the final seven points in the match.

UP NEXT: The Golden Eagles welcome cross-town foe Milwaukee to the Al on Sunday for a 1 p.m. matinee. The Golden Eagles will host First Responders Day, honoring those on the front lines safeguarding our community. The contest against the Panthers, who fell to LSU in four sets on Friday night, will air live on FloSports.
