
Volleyball tops UConn, 3-1, in Storrs

STORRS, Connecticut – The Marquette University women's volleyball team claimed the final three sets in a 3-1 win against UConn at Gampel Pavilion on Saturday afternoon.
The Golden Eagles (18-3, 9-1 BIG EAST) were led by 11 kills from Savannah Rennie, while Hannah Vanden Berg had 10.Hope Werch each had eight and hit .300.
The Huskies claimed the opening set, 25-21, despite the fact that MU held a 19-18 lead late in the frame. UConn hit .333 in the first set and forced Marquette into late timeouts as the Huskies took 20-19 and 23-20 leads.
Marquette claimed the next three sets 25-20, 25-17 and 25-23 for the four-set victory. The Golden Eagles took their first lead of the second frame at 19-18 on a Werch kill and hit .355 (14-3-31) in the stanza.
UConn called timeouts with 13-9 and 19-12 deficits in the third, but could not hold off Marquette as it picked up a 25-17 win after the break.Â
The Golden Eagles closed out a tight fourth set, 25-23, on back-to-back points from Vanden Berg after UConn had rallied to knot the frame at 23.
UConn (14-7, 6-3 BIG EAST) falls to 9-2 at Gampel this year and 0-2 against Marquette.
MU has a 8-3 edge in the all-time series and has won the last five meetings. MU's last trip to Storrs in the fall of 2011 resulted in a 3-1 win and UConn's last win in the series also came in four sets at Gampel Pavilion in Oct. 2009.
UP NEXT: The Golden Eagles return to the Al McGuire Center to host No. 24 Creighton on Friday, Oct. 29 before facing Providence on Saturday night. MU then goes on the road for its first four matches of November.
