The Golden Eagles had three seniors tally hat tricks in the season finale
MILWAUKEE – The Marquette University women's lacrosse team fell to Georgetown, 17-10, in the BIG EAST Championship Semifinals at Valley Fields on Thursday night.
Marquette (9-9, 3-2 BIG EAST) closes its 2019 season with the setback. Fittingly, the Golden Eagles were led by an all-senior scoring effort tonight.
Three seniors had three goals each as Grace Gabriel, Lindsey Willcocks and graduate student Charlotte McGuire each notched hat tricks. Cate Soccodato added in a goal to round out the scoring margin for Marquette.
Gabriel scored the Golden Eagles' first two goals of the game, once to tie it and another to bring her team within one. Georgetown (10-8, 3-2 BIG EAST) had two separate three-goal spurts to secure their lead, which they never lost from the 24:52 mark of the first half.
The Hoyas were led by Gabriel's BIG EAST Co-Midfielder of the Year recipient Francesca Whitehurst with eight points, including six goals.
Marquette's Jules Horning collected 10 saves to the Hoyas' Haelle Chomo's seven.
Georgetown owned the draw control circle 17-13 as well as the edge in ground balls, 21-11.
The Golden Eagles wrap up their 2019 season, but not without setting numerous records and milestones, including the team's second postseason appearance in as many years, the program's highest-ever seed in the conference tournament and Marquette's first win over a top-25 opponent.
