The Golden Eagles' second-half rally was not enough in their BIG EAST opener
MILWAUKEE – The Marquette University women's lacrosse team fell to Villanova in the BIG EAST lidlifter on Saturday afternoon at Valley Fields, 15-13.
The Golden Eagles (6-7, 0-1 BIG EAST) had three players record hat tricks, including Charlotte McGuire's first-half hat trick to fuel Marquette early on. Lindsey Willcocks led the squad with four goals of her own while Shea Garcia tallied three scores.
Marquette trailed by five heading into the break, 9-4, as Villanova (7-4, 1-0 BIG EAST) went on a 6-0 run spanning from the end of the first into the second half.
The Golden Eagles rattled off its own barrage in the form of a 7-0 run from 25:59 to the 12:12 mark in the second frame to tie things up at 11-11. Megan Menzuber scored her two goals during that important 14-minute span.
The Wildcats scored back-to-back tallies to stop the MU scoring frenzy, but Willcocks would come up in a big way for Marquette down the stretch. She scored with 5:14 remaining to even the score at 13, but after a late Menzuber goal was ruled no-good, Villanova scored two tallies in the final 4 minutes of action to hold on, 15-13.
Marquette owned the draw controls 16-14, as Grace Gabriel collected eight and Emily Cooper won four for the Golden Eagles. Defensively, Anna Gallagher forced four turnovers while Jocelyn Miller scooped up four ground balls.
Jules Horning made three saves for Marquette while Villanova's Alexa Moro tallied seven.
Villanova was led by Brittany Bruno with six goals and an assist on the day.
