
Marquette Closes Regular Season with a Sweep at Providence

The Golden Eagles conclude BIG EAST play with a 16-2 record
PROVIDENCE, R.I.—The 9th-ranked Marquette University volleyball team closed out the regular season slate with a three-set (25-9, 28-26, 25-17) sweep at Providence on Sunday afternoon and finish the BIG EAST season with their most wins in league play since joining the conference in 2005 at a 16-2 record.
Allie Barber paved the way for the Golden Eagles (26-4, 16-2) with 12 kills, while Hope Werch tallied a double-double with 11 kills and 11 digs. Martha Konovodoff collected 14 digs, while Hannah Vanden Berg added 10.
Setters Sarah Rose and Lauren Speckman dished out 22 and 12 assists, respectively.
Marquette took the first set with ease as the Golden Eagles combined to hit .400 and held Providence to a .000 clip behind five kills from Barber. The Friars gave MU fight in the second frame and tied the set at 23 and held two set points of their own before consecutive kills from Barber secured the 28-26 win for the Golden Eagles. Werch connected on four kills in the third set to help lead MU to a 25-17 win for the sweep.
The Golden Eagles combined to hit .346 in the match, while holding the Friars (6-25, 1-17) to a .109 percentage. Addison Root led PC with nine kills in the match.
UP NEXT: Marquette has earned the No. 2 seed in the 2019 BIG EAST Championship presented by Jeep and will take on either St. John's or Villanova in the semifinals on Friday, Nov. 29 at 2:30 p.m. CT.
