Marquette's Run Comes to an End in 3-0 Loss to Illinois

The Golden Eagles had a program-best 28 wins in 2018
CHAMPAIGN, Ill.— A historic season came to a close as the 14th seeded Marquette volleyball team fell in straight sets (19-25, 21-25, 16-25) to No. 3 seed, and host, Illinois on Friday afternoon at Huff Hall.
Junior Allie Barber led the Golden Eagles (28-7) 14 kills, while redshirt senior Jenna Rosenthal and sophomore Hope Werch each connected for seven kills, while Rosenthal hit at a .400 clip.
Illinois came out firing in the first set hitting at a .552 clip, while Marquette kept it close. Hope Werch led the Golden Eagles with four kills, while three others recorded three. In the second set the Golden Eagles had the score tied at 20 after Rosenthal connected for a kill, but the Illini used a timeout wisely and closed out the frame with a 5-1 run for the win.
In the third set Illinois got on the board first and following a 2-2 tie, pushed out to a 10-4 lead. The Golden Eagles couldn't find their typical excellent serve and pass momentum, falling 25-16.
Jacqueline Quade led Illinois (31-3) with 12 kills, while setter Jordyn Poulter dished out 38 assists as the Illini connected for a .354 clip as a squad.
Marquette was playing in its eighth straight NCAA Tournament and reached the round of 16 for the first time in program history.
