Hannah Vanden Berg and Claire Nuessmeier will join the Golden Eagles
MILWAUKEE—The Marquette University women's volleyball team and head coach Ryan Theis announces the signing of Claire Nuessmeier and Hannah Vanden Berg to National Letters of Intent. The duo will arrive on campus in the summer and have four years of eligibility remaining.
"The 2019 class is a small class for us, but we love the athleticism and physicality that Hannah and Claire will add to our program," Theis said. "Both have been multi-sport athletes in high school and we're excited to see the growth they'll bring when they get to focus on just volleyball at Marquette."
Nuessmeier is a 6'2 middle blocker from St. Peter, Minnesota and a four-year letterwinner in both volleyball and track at St. Peter High School. She earned all-conference accolades in each of her four years and guided her team to three Big South Conference East Championships. Playing for Mizuno Northern Lights, Nuessmeier helped her squad to first place at the Kansas City Show Me Qualifier in 2018 and to a fifth-place finish at the 2018 AAU Nationals. She owns 1,339 career kills, 239 solo blocks and 295 block assists.
"Claire was a late add to our 2019 class," Theis said. "She came to camp this summer and we were blown away by how dynamic she is. Claire hasn't been exposed to a ton of high-level volleyball in her past, but she's a great learner and we think she'll catch up to the speed of the game quickly."
Vanden Berg joins Marquette from Kaukauna, Wisconsin and is a four-year letterwinner and starter at Little Chute High School. The 6'2 outside hitter earned four consecutive first team all-conference honors and is a three-time conference Player of the Year, while also earning two straight first team all-state awards. Vanden Berg helped her school to a pair of conference championships and three regional championships, while earning the 2018 sectional championship that led the Mustangs to become a 2018 Wisconsin State Qualifier. She earned the 2017-18 Wisconsin Sports Awards Girls Athlete of the Year honor and was named an Under Armour Honorable Mention All-American in 2018. She owns the school record with 2,433 kills, 1,418 digs and 235 aces throughout her four-year career. Playing club volleyball for Fox Cities Elite, Vanden Berg guided her team to three National Qualifiers and a third-place national finish in 2016.
"Hannah just led her high school team to the state tournament for the first time in 15 years," Theis noted. "She also led the state in both hitting percentage and kills, which we all know is no easy task. We think she has the potential to carry a big load for us in the future and we can't wait to get her on campus this summer."
Marquette will graduate three from the team next year in Anna Haak, Abby Julian and Jenna Rosenthal.
