MILWAUKEE - The Marquette University women's lacrosse team kicked off its fall ball season Sunday, Sept. 29 at Valley Fields, taking on the Cincinnati Bearcats and the Grand Valley State Lakers in a day-long tournament.
The Golden Eagles took part in three scrimmages on the day. MU initially matched up against both Cincinnati and GVSU for a pair of 50-minute affairs, and finished up with a 30-minute scrimmage against GVSU.
In game one, MU defeated the Lakers by a tally of 7-4. After a break in between games, MU returned to action and defeated the Bearcats 9-0. Marquette then fell to GVSU, 7-0, in a 30-minute scrimmage.
Sophomore Claire Costanza led the way for Marquette, notching three total goals on the afternoon including two against Cincinnati. Sophomore Hayley Baas also contributed two scores for the day.
"We mainly use the fall season to get everyone playing time and to look at different combinations of players and see how we play as a unit," Marquette head coach Meredith Black. "We want to work together as a team, play together as a team, and get to know each other's strengths and weaknesses. It is a great way to find out what we need to work on."
The Golden Eagles return to action on Sunday, Oct. 6 in Columbus, Ohio where the Ohio State University will host a day-long tournament.
