LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Sophomore Kristen Gaffey led the way for the Marquette University men's and women's track and field teams Friday afternoon with a pair of personal bests in the shot put and discus, while junior Kyle Winter won the 800-meter run at the Cardinal Twilight Classic in Louisville, Ky.
Other student-athletes wrapped up their season at the Dr. Keeler Invitational in Naperville, Ill.
Gaffey's mark of 47-11.25 (14.61 meters) in the shot put is the third-best mark in Marquette women's history, while her discus toss of 154-00 (46.95 meters) is No. 6 all-time.
Winter claimed the 800-meter run crown at Louisville in 1:50.57, but his mark was not enough to top his season's best mark recorded last weekend at the BIG EAST Championships. That mark, 1:50.41, was 61st in the NCAA West Region entering the weekend.
The Golden Eagles entered their final meets with hopes of moving up the NCAA descending order lists and qualify for the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds on May 24-28 in Austin, Texas. Unfortunately those in position with the most to gain failed to capitalize.
"These meets can always be a little tough coming off the conference championships and going right into finals week," Marquette head coach Bert Rogers said. "I thought Kyle and Tyler O'Brien made nice efforts at Louisville and we had some nice performances at North Central as well. Jack Hackett is going to get himself in the mix there in the 10,000 meters at the NCAA preliminary rounds, but it is going to be a tough go for both Tyler and Kyle.
"Kristen Gaffey had a couple of nice PRs, as did our freshmen in the men's 400 at North Central and Evan Ross in the 800."
Senior Tyler O'Brien, who sat 51st in the 200-meter dash in the region, placed fourth in event with a time of 21.45 seconds, over two-tenths of a second over his season's best.
In the men's 10,000-meter run on Thursday evening at North Central College's Dr. Keeler Invitational, Jack Hackett notched a new personal-best time of 30:04.72 to place second and put himself in the mix for a spot at the NCAA preliminary rounds.
Marquette also received personal-best marks from Elisia Meyle, Glenn Lawrence, Evan Ross and Brendan Franz at the Dr. Keeler Invitational. Ross' time of 1:51.30 is the No. 10 mark all-time at MU in the men's 800.
Sophomore Patrick Stuart joined Gaffey by notching a PR in the shot put at Louisville.
The announcement of NCAA West Preliminary Rounds participants will be made Thursday, May 17.
