MADISON, Wis. - The Marquette University men's and women's track and field squads concluded competition Saturday evening at the Wisconsin Twilight meet by capturing eight event titles at the Dan McClimon Memorial Track Complex.
"We had a pretty solid meet considering the weather was in the mid-40s and raining, which affected the sprints, jumps and throws," head coach Bert Rogers said. "Carrie (Schmid) and Olivia (Johnson) each won their events and did pretty well. Olivia ran well until the last 200 meters and just didn't have it at the end. She will try to get an NCAA time next weekend."
Johnson fell short in her attempt to reach a mark qualifying her for the first round of the NCAA Championships, but took home a victory in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:35.17.
Schmid earned a first-place finish in the pole vault, reaching a height of 3.75 meters.
Freshman Kyle Winter set a two-second personal best with a time of 1:51.92 to place second in the 800-meter run, while Garrett McKnight and Ben Schmitz finished ninth and 11th, respectively.
Courtney Kelly collected her second-straight victory in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 11:04.90.
Both the men and the women collected event victories in the 5,000-meter run. Blake Johnson won for the men in 14:30.41, while Maureen Keane was victorious on the women's side in 17:58.24.
In the sprints, senior Randey Fisher and freshman Chanel Franklin captured event victories in the 400 and 200, respectively.
In the hammer throw, senior Jeff Kluge won the event with a toss of 55.75 meters.
The Golden Eagles return to action Thursday, May 13 at the North Central Invitational and will also compete Friday at the Louisville Twilight.
