Golden Eagles Conclude 2010 BIG EAST Outdoor Championships

CINCINNATI - The Marquette University men's and women's track and field squads concluded the 2010 BIG EAST Outdoor Championships Sunday afternoon. The MU men finished 12th while the women placed 14th.

"We had a solid meet but some bad luck along the way," head coach Bert Rogers said. "Overall we had some good performances at or above season's best marks. I am really proud of the way the senior class performed this season and I am pleased at where we stand looking ahead."

In the men's 4x800-meter relay, Marquette was at the head of the pack before freshman Kyle Winter lost the baton after getting caught with another runner.

"Peter (Bolgert) was running and had us among the top-four squads when he handed off to Kyle. Kyle then was able to get us into first before he got tangled with another runner and lost the baton. We lost about 20 seconds there and couldn't recover."

Marquette also faced some challenges in the women's high jump where senior Erynn James was hobbled from an ankle injury suffered April 24 at the Marquette Twilight.

James was able to reach 1.65 meters to place 12th, but Rogers believes she will be back to form in time for the first round of the NCAA Championships.

"I was impressed with how she performed, considering the circumstances," Rogers said. "With her injury coming a weekend ago it was poor timing, but I thought she stepped up. She will be ready to go in two weeks for the NCAAs."

Senior Jeff Kluge recorded MU's highest finish of the day in the hammer throw, taking fifth-place with a distance of 56.49 meters. Classmate Eric Matsuzewski also competed and placed 11th.

In the women's hammer throw Kelley Corcoran placed sixth with a personal-best distance of 51.71 meters.

Marquette will return to action May 8 at the Wisconsin Twilight.
