MILWAUKEE -- The Marquette University track and field team returns to action this weekend at the John McDonnell Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark.
Events begin Friday at the John McDonnell Invitational at 12 p.m. CT with the hammer throw, followed by the 5,000-meter run set to begin at 9:00 p.m. The action will continue on Saturday morning at 10:00 a.m. with the discus and will conclude after Saturday night's 4x400-meter relay set to begin at 9:10 p.m.
"With certain entry standards required to get into this meet, there will be elite competition across the board," said head coach Bert Rogers. "There will probably even be Olympians competing in some events as well. The weather forecast looks like it should be nice with a fast track so we should have some good times. It is going to be a tough, fast meet."
After being named as the first ever BIG EAST Track Athlete of the Week following her performance at the Georgia Relays in March, junior Jayne Grebinski will attempt best her personal record of 10:37.06 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase set at that meet and break Briana Dahm's school record of 10:01.77 in the event.
Senior Jessica Ehlen looks to continue her success in the hammer throw after recording an NCAA Regional qualifying mark with a distance of 56.22 meters in last weekend's dual meet against the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Also recording a BIG EAST qualifying mark last weekend and upping her school record was Kelly Magennis who won the javelin event with a throw of 42.22 meters.
On the men's side, school record holder Tyler O'Brien will take aim at improving his mark in the 200-meter dash. He took claim to the "Fastest Man in Milwaukee" with his win last weekend in the 100-meter dash.
Arkansas' John McDonnell Field will host the 2009 NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships in June.
The Golden Eagles will also send a split squad Saturday to the Warrior Relays at Wisconsin Lutheran. The Relays will begin at 11:30 a.m. with the women's hammer throw, the women's long jump and the men's distance medley relay.
