MILWAUKEE - Three members of the Marquette women's soccer team picked up Soccer Buzz Great Lakes Region honors announced by the magazine. Senior Christy Zwolski and junior Katie Kelly were named the second team, and freshman Rosie Malone-Povolny was selected to the all-freshman team.
Zwolski, a BIG EAST All-Second Team selection, led Marquette in scoring with 17 points on five goals and seven assists. Zwolski tallied at least one point in seven BIG EAST matches for the season and ranked ninth in the conference in points per game, averaging 0.85. This is the second regional post-season award for Zwolski as she was named to the NSCAA All-Great Lakes Third Team.
Kelly was Marquette's secret weapon on offense for the 2007 season as she notched a team best nine assists. Her 0.45 assists per game average ranked 36th in the nation, while her nine total helpers stood third in the BIG EAST. She was a key component of Marquette's stifling backline that recorded a program record 12 shutouts and didn't allow a goal through nine of the Golden Eagles' first 10 games of the season.
The Kansas City, Mo., native earned BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week honors on Sept. 17, as well as national acclaim by being named to the Soccer America Team of the Week. Top Drawer Soccer honored Kelly with team of the week honors on Sept. 4.
This is the fourth post-season honor for Kelly as she was a Top Drawer Soccer College Team of the Season First Team selection, a third team All-BIG EAST honoree and was named to the NSCAA All-Great Lakes Third Team.
This is also the third straight season Kelly has been honored regionally by Soccer Buzz. She was a third team selection following the 2006 season and an all-freshman honoree in 2005.
Malone-Povolny started in the midfield in all 20 games her rookie season and totaled three points on one goal and one assist. Her lone goal of the season came as the game winner in a 2-0 victory over Providence. She stood tied for fourth on the team in the shots column, launching 25 for the season. Six of her attempts were on goal.
