MILWAUKEE - Junior defender Katie Kelly picked up a second post-season honor as she was a Top Drawer Soccer College Team of the Season First Team selection.
"This is a tremendous honor for Katie and our program, as it reflects the work our players put forth this past season," said head coach Markus Roeders. "Katie continues to make great strides on the field and has played an important role since she came to Marquette as a freshman. She is a very good defender, but what separates her from the rest is that she can generate opportunities on the offensive end. She can score or provide assists, and she is willing to take those chances. Top Drawer Soccer's First Team is a `who's who' list of the finest collegiate women's soccer players. All those named are All-America selections, and to have Katie listed among those is outstanding."
Kelly, a second team All-BIG EAST honoree, was Marquette's secret weapon on offense for the 2007 season as she notched a team best nine assists. Her 0.45 assists per game average ranks 35th in the nation. She was a key component of Marquette's stifling backline that recorded a program record 12 shutouts and didn't allow a goal through nine of the Golden Eagles' first 10 games of the season.
The Kansas City, Mo., native earned BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week honors on Sept. 17, as well as, national acclaim by being named to the Soccer America Team of the Week. Top Drawer Soccer honored Kelly with team of the week honors on Sept. 4.
Along with Kelly, five BIG EAST student-athletes earned first team honors. The four others were: Joanna Haig (GK, Louisville), Jillian Loyden (GK, Villanova), Brittany Bock (M, Notre Dame) and Kerri Hanks (F, Notre Dame).
