LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The Marquette women?s soccer team opened a six-game road stretch with a 4-1 victory at Louisville this evening. The Golden Eagles dominated play for a majority of the game and freshman Kate Gordon?s goal at the 28:58 mark broke a 1-1 tie and proved to be the game-winner. Marquette improved to 5-4 2 and 3-1-1 with the win.
?We settled down after a rough start and just wore them down in the second half,? Marquette coach Markus Roeders said. ?The field is smaller down here and we weren?t able to do some of the things we like to do, however, we overcame those difficulties and got a pleasing conference win on the road.?
Kelly Roethe gave Marquette an early, one-goal lead when she scored off a direct free kick at the 2:04 mark. The goal was her team-leading sixth of the season. A scrappy Louisville squad, riding an eight-game losing streak into tonight?s contest, wouldn?t go away in the first half. Keeper Lynn Clashman made three opening-frame stops to keep the Cards within striking distance. And strike they did in the 18th minute, when freshman striker Carmel Kaplinger tied the game at 1-1. Gordon?s game-winner came off an assist from Melissa Moffatt in the 29th minute and gave the Golden Eagles a 2-1 lead at the intermission. It was Gordon?s fourth goal of the season.
Erin Morgan opened the second-half scoring and put Marquette up 3-1 on her fourth goal of the season at 68:32. The senior striker took a pass from Roethe and completed a breakaway with an impressive strike from 12 yards out. Freshman Ashley Spakowitz netted her first collegiate goal at the 87:36 mark to conclude the game?s scoring.
?As his been the trend over our last few games, it was a total team effort for us tonight,? Roeders said. ?Our offense is getting in place to create scoring opportunities and the defense is shutting down all scoring alleys. It?s a nice combination and we?re using it to get back into the Conference USA race.
Marquette is back in action again on Sun., Oct.3, at Cincinnati. The Golden Eagles and the Bearcats are scheduled for a noon (CT) kick-off.
